How to Apply

This information has been designed to assist you in the preparation of your application. Please use it as a guide and to record your steps.

A completed application consists of:

  1. The AMCAS application
  2. The secondary application and a nonrefundable application fee of $130. Applicants who have received an AMCAS fee waiver will also receive a fee waiver from Geisel. You may request a fee waiver from Geisel by emailing the Admissions Office at Geisel.Admissions@dartmouth.edu.
  3. We require a composite recommendation from your school's premedical committee or a packet containing a minimum of 3 individual letters from your school. If your school has no premedical committee, a minimum of 3 individual letters is required. We encourage you to submit additional (up to 5) letters from supervisors, employers, and other colleagues who know you well. If you are in graduate school, a letter from your thesis advisor is recommended as one of the 3 required letters. Please submit all letters through AMCAS using one of their acceptable forms of receipt. Please note that the maximum number of letters we will review is 5, and we will read the first 5 letters received by AMCAS.
  4. Additional application materials are required of all candidates for the MD-PhD joint-degree program. Detailed information about the application procedures for the MD-PhD joint degree program is available with the secondary application. Please see the Admissions Requirements page for information about other joint degree programs at Geisel.

The AMCAS application

The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth participates in the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS), the AMCAS Letter of Recommendation Service and the AMCAS Criminal Background Check Program. The first step in applying to Geisel is filing an application with AMCAS. For questions email AMCAS@AAMC.org or call (202) 828-0600.

Although you may start your AMCAS application on May 2, 2024, the earliest date by which applications may be filed with AMCAS for submission for medical school entrance is May 28, 2024. Our institutional deadline for submitting your application through AMCAS is November 1 2024, though we recommend that you file the AMCAS application as early as possible to guarantee that you have enough time to complete subsequent steps in the process. If you will not be taking the MCAT until late in 2024, you are likewise urged to file the AMCAS application as early as possible (before you receive your score report). AMCAS will automatically forward your MCAT results. We will accept results from MCAT exams taken from January 2022 to September 2024, with results to us by December 1, 2024. Transcripts for all academic work should be sent to AMCAS as directed in the AMCAS instructions.

The Secondary Application

Once AMCAS notifies our office of your application, we will provide access to the secondary application to all applicants with an MCAT score of 503 or higher, requesting information supplementary to that recorded by AMCAS. For those who plan to enter the Geisel School of Medicine in 2025, the secondary application deadline is December 1, 2024. All application materials must be received by December 1, 2024. To ensure fairness to all applicants, we are strict about deadlines.

Interview Notification

Applications are reviewed from July through February. You will be notified by email when a decision is reached regarding an interview. Interviews occur from August to March.

Final Notification

Review of files by the Admissions Committee continues after the interview. Notification of acceptance or denial is issued as soon as the decision is known, but no earlier than October 15, 2024 and no later than April 15, 2025. Interviewed applicants placed on the waiting list are notified of this status. The waiting list is reviewed periodically. Historically, a number of applicants initially placed on the waiting list are offered places.

Withdrawals

Should you wish to withdraw your application, written notification is required.

Transfer Admissions

The Geisel School of Medicine has a highly integrated competency based curriculum with interwoven longitudinal curricular components delivered in three phases: Foundations of Medicine, Clinical Immersion, and Exploration and Differentiation. The curriculum is supported by our intensive and personalized longitudinal coaching program. This distinctive curriculum makes it difficult for the School of Medicine and the Admissions Committee to assess for educational equivalency and to ensure student success for potential transfer students. In addition, Geisel strives to maintain a specific class size to allow for the best educational experience possible for each student. For these reasons, Geisel does not entertain student transfers.
